In a new ad, Obama says, "I don't take money from oil companies."
Technically, that's true, since a law that has been on the books for more than a century prohibits corporations from giving money directly to any federal candidate. But that doesn't distinguish Obama from his rivals in the race.
We find the statement misleading:
"Obama has accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses.
Two of Obama's bundlers are top executives at oil companies and are listed on his Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the presidential hopeful."
Out of how many millions from private donations? That amount adds up to less than 1% of his monthly totals.
He said he didn't take any, remember?
He should return this money.
You're making a big deal out of something that's only mildly worrisome at worst. Again, this is <1% of just his average monthly totals, and probably less than a tenth of a percent of his overall fundraising. In the meantime, I believe the Clintons are being investigated for campaign fraud. That seems a little bit more salient, given that one is "he said he didn't take oil company money but he took some money from oil execs" and the other is "while they are in a campaign, the Clintons are being checked out for messing with the legitimacy of another one."
"I don't take money from oil companies." --Barack Obama
"Don't tell me words don't matter" --Barack Obama
He didn't. He took money from someone who happens to be an oil company executive.
Is that spin? Sure it is. Is your take spin too? Sure it is.
So, he shouldn't return the money?
I never said that. It makes me no difference one way or another. If he wants to make a super-solid stance, then he should. If he wants to allow people to donate to his campaign regardless their employment position, he shouldn't.
Nice to see you don't like the oil companies either DWEB, bravo.
Jimster, this is an off topic comment. Please make only on topic comments or else I will remove them.
Thanks
Don't you get it? The problem is that he said in an ad, "I don't take money from oil companies or Washington lobbyists, and I won't let them block change anymore." -- but he DOES take large single donations from people in the oil business. It goes back to that whole problem of shading the truth. He is especially talented at doing that, and even does it in his books.
What particularly gets to me is his sickening little tag line, "...and I won't let them block change anymore."
What...? Pray tell, Obama, how the h3ll are you going to "stop them from blocking change"? If that isn't the vaguest bit of nonsense I've heard out of a politician's mouth, I don't know what is.
